''There`s a story I tell about why dogs hate cats, and I talk about the fact that the dog and cat`s favorite thing in the world is ham,'' he says. Here`s how he starts one story when he`s talking to inner-city black kids, for example: It`s pretty easy to personalize any story, Lester says. Lester says parents sometimes need a little pep talk to start telling stories: ''We stopped seeing value in telling stories because of how overpowering the media are,'' he says, ''particularly television and movies.'' We compare ourselves to the media, and ''that`s debasing ourselves and undervaluing our creativity.'' who can write stories as entertaining as one of these.'' There are very few writers in New York, Chicago or L.A. (Remember that) these tales come from people who were illiterate. It`s easy to make any story you read your own, Lester says: ''Remember the plot line, and the story will come out a little bit different every time.
If you can`t tell it the way I have it written, tell it the way that`s most comfortable for you.''
